“Bryan Scott Becoming Reliable Asset on Buffalo Bills Defense”

If the Buffalo Bills‘ comeback stunner in Week 3 could be distilled into just one play, it would beBryan Scott’s(notes) 2nd quarter interception. With the Patriots up 21-7, Tom Brady(notes) and company seemed just as unstoppable as everyone outside Buffalo had assumed. They had cruised to the Buffalo 13 with just a minute left in the half, and were on the verge of putting up a nearly insurmountable lead. Then Bryan Scott picked off Brady’s pass to Danny Woodhead(notes), and everything changed.
Scott had to dive over a falling Woodhead from behind, looking like he was suspended in mid-air as he grabbed the ball. When Scott had shut down that potential Pats scoring drive, he not only kept the game within reach, he showed that Brady could be picked. It was the first of four interceptions for the Bills secondary.
His isn’t the first name that comes to mind when you think of what’s been billed as the Bills’ brand new defense. Scott is a 9-year vet who signed with the Bills back in 2007. Starting his career as a strong safety with theAtlanta Falcons, he played both safety spots for the Bills as they shuffled the secondary to find an effective combination. Although he proved to be competent, he never made a big impression against Donte Whitner(notes) and up-and-coming Jairus Byrd(notes).
Fans like me got a taste of what Scott could do in ’09 after he returned from a Week 3 injury to play a 6-game stretch as ILB. He would get 2 sacks, 81 tackles, a forced fumble, and an interception that year, including the 3 games he started as strong safety.
Scott was re-signed to a two-year contract in 2010, with Chan Gailey officially moving him back to safety behind Whitner and George Wilson(notes)on the depth chart. 2010 was also the year that Scott started riding his bicycle on a 5-mile round trip to the Bills Fieldhouse every morning, making him the only player on the team not to drive to work. Scott gets in no less than 100 miles a week on his bike.
You might not picture a cycling enthusiast playing ILB in the NFL, but that’s where Scott started in Week 1 against the Chiefs at Arrowhead. Playing almost the whole game as a nickle linebacker, Scott ended up with 8 tackles and 1 sack. Not bad for a guy who can play pass coverage and pick off Tom Brady.
